Below is a list of organisations which provide information, advice and support for people from migrant and minority ethnic communities in Northern Ireland. If there are other organisations you feel should be included on the list please let us know.

 

General Advice and Information

Regional

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB): Offers free, confidential and impartial advice;

EMBRACE NI : An inter-church organisation which works to make Northern Ireland a more welcoming place for all people from other countries and minority ethnic backgrounds. Embrace has an emergency fund which is used to provide emergency assistance to destitute migrants and asylum seekers.

Equality Commission for Northern Ireland: Provides free information, advice and guidance

Law Centre NI: Provides specialist legal support to organisations and disadvantaged on discrimination issues

Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities (NICEM): Campaigns on issues of common concern to minority ethnic communities; provides support to victims of hate crime

Northern Ireland District Councils: Local Councils in Northern Ireland

 

Co. Antrim

Ballymoney Community Resource Centre: Provides a drop-in service for people from migrant and minority ethnic communities

Ballymena Inter-Ethnic Forum: Provides free advice and support in dealing with Home Office, Social Security Agency etc.

Belfast Friendship Club: A space for meeting in a diverse, supportive and relaxed atmosphere. Offering friendship and connection to a wide range of opportunities in and around Belfast and informal signposting as required.

Lower Ormeau Resident’s Action Group (LORAG):  Promotes a whole community approach to supporting community cohesion.

 

Co. Armagh

Craigavon Intercultural Programme: Offers practical assistance to both indigenous and new communities in promoting integration and encouraging full participation in society regardless of race/nationality.

Wah Hep Chinese Association: Runs after school classes, Chinese language classes, anti-racism and cultural awareness classes and ICT classes for ethnic minorities, mainly the Chinese community. Contact: paulyam@yahoo.com

 

Co. Derry/Londonderry

North West Migrants Forum: Provides an advice and support service for migrants of a black minority ethnic background.

 

Co. Down

Newry and Mourne Ethnic Minority Support Centre: Provides advice and support for people from migrant and minority ethnic communities; works with local community groups to increase understanding of ethnic diversity and integration.

 

Co. Fermanagh

Strabane Ethnic Community Association (SECA) : Provides advice and support for people from migrant and minority ethnic communities

 

Co. Tyrone

South Tyrone Empowerment Project (STEP): Provides advice and support for people from migrant and minority ethnic communities; provides interpreting and translation services

 

Refugee and Asylum

 • Northern Ireland Community of Refugees and Asylum Seekers (NICRAS): A refugee and asylum seeker led organisation which provides information and advice and represents the interests of the refugee and asylum seeking communities.

Human Trafficking

Modern Slavery Helpline: Advice on how to spot signs that someone may be a victim of trafficking or modern day slavery and how to report it.

•Migrant Help:  A UK charity which provides specialist support for victims of human trafficking.

 

Families and Children

Homestart: Provides support to families with children under five.

Tuar Ceatha Barnardos: Provides parenting support, group work and high quality play based learning for young children.

Whiterock Children's Centre: Free and confidential service for ethnic minority families to help with access to childcare, housing, health and education services.

 

Hate Crime

Belfast Migrant Centre: Provides support to victims of racist hate crime.

PSNI: hate crime reporting:  For non-emergencies call 101; in an emergency call 999.

Victim Support NI:  Offers a free and confidential service to victims and witnesses of crime

 

Employment

Irish Congress of Trade Unions (NICICTU): Offer support, advice and representation to migrant workers who experience problems at work.

 

Language and Education

Belong: Aims to promote a sense of belonging for black and minority ethnic children in Northern Ireland communities, schools and society.

Belfast Metropolitan College : A college of further and higher education which also provides a wide variety of ESOL classes.

Foyle Language School : A language school based in Derry/Londonderry

Northern Regional College: A college of further and higher education which also provides a wide variety of ESOL classes. There are campuses in Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Larne, Magherafelt and Newtownabbey.

North West Regional College: A college of further and higher education which also provides a wide variety of ESOL classes. There are campuses in Derry/Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane;

Southern Regional College: A college of further and higher education which also provides a wide variety of ESOL classes.

Housing and Homelessness

Northern Ireland Housing Executive: Offers advice on a wide range of housing topics.

Simon Community: Provides accommodation and support for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. 24 hour helpline: Provides emergency accommodation, advice and community support for people who are homeless or those who are at risk of becoming homeless

Welcome Organisation: Delivers specialist support services to people who are homeless or who are at risk of becoming homeless.

 

Health and Social Care

Northern Ireland New Entrant Service: A nurse-led service which aims to provide access to health care for new entrants to Northern Ireland, including asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants.

Chinese Welfare Association: Aims to increase access to health services for BME groups

African and Caribbean Support Organisation Northern Ireland: Information and support for people who are from African and Caribbean nations.

Horn of Africa People’s Aid Northern Ireland: Provides information and support for people from the Horn of Africa living in Northern Ireland

Chinese Welfare Association : Provides a range of advice and services to Chinese communities.

Indian Community Centre Belfast: Works towards the promotion and greater understanding of Indian Culture and Traditions in Northern Ireland;

Kerala Association: Support for the Indian Malayalee community living in Derry/Londonderry

Romanian Roma Community Association Northern Ireland : Information and support for Romanian Roma living in Northern Ireland

• Travellers: An Munia Tober: Provides support and practical help to Travellers; advocates for equity of service for Travellers accessing public services

Belfast Islamic Centre: Provides a wide range of services for the Muslim community including youth development, social welfare services and adult education.
